Any help with finding books
QuoteReply

Hi

I'm doing the degree level old testament thelogy & need to access loads of books but am struggling to find them. i cant afford to buy them new & even second hand is not cheap. I have got a couple from abebooks & have checked amazon & other sites. i work full time & so getting to college to access the library is a bit of a non starter for me, there is also the cost to travel in from the south coast. So any one know of a library near to Brighton that has a reasonably comprehensive theological section or any other sugestions, or has anyone done that module & got books that they might like to sell.

Ever hopeful

Please don't forget to read the advice and reading resources in the student handbook: http://www.spurgeonsonline.org.uk/StudentsHandbook/LibraryandReadingAdvice/tabid/179/Default.aspx

There might be some useful information which you can find there.  I hope you manage to get hold of the relevant texts but if you don't do let me know and we will see what we can do to help further.  Debra

I'm doing the OT Theology module too. I'm fortunate to live near a cathedral which has a theological library but they only held 5 of the many books listed as key texts. I have queried with college whether the module includes any input material from the tutor (as was the case with a previous online module I studied) and they are trying to find out. Otherwise, the module relies totally on being able to access all the key texts books and this is proving difficult. My one ray of light is that it looks as if I might be able to borrow a few more from a local minister. I went through each unit of the module and made a note of all the key texts (they don't appear as one list in the module). I also noted which units relied on which book so that I had an indication of how 'core' each book was to the module. I then circulated the list to local ministers (Baptist and ecumenical). Only one has been able to help but it appears that he has a few of the books on the list. I'm still not sure whether I will be able to complete the module with so many of the key texts still not accessed. Next time, I think I will ask for a list of key texts before I sign up for a module so that I choose one I'm able to complete.  ps - I sent Debra Reid my list of key texts so do ask her for a copy - save you going through each unit.

Just had another thought re sourcing books. When I was studying at Spurgeons part-time, students were coming into college from all over the country. Maybe you could ask college to post a plea on the noticebaord for someone coming in from the Brighton area to act as courier for you so that you could borrow from the college library. Just a thought. (I'm also going to ask Debra/Emma if its possible for any other of the Key Texts to be included in the Module Reader - at the moment there is only the section by J A Wainwright included as part of unit 3).

Thanks Jo

I have managed to get some of the key text books, the ones that I will use more than once, second hand but it has delayed me getting started & I am in the process of trying to find the time and get re-motivated. I agree that it would be very helpful to have more Key Text included in the Module Reader; I would be very interested in what reply you get on that one. Thanks for taking the time to post your suggestions really appreciate it. Nice to know I have not struggled alone.
