Can you help?
QuoteReply

Hi,

I have posted about this before and have received vast amounts of encouragement, of which I am grateful. I am contacting once again with regards the length of time it seems to be taking. I cannot deny that was I in the classroom my dedication/attention/commitment be double, even treble, what it is now. I do read the items suggested in the modules, I do enjoy what I am studying and more importantly I genuinely want to complete the course.

My post is more a plea for assistance from anyone who has hit that wall and overcome it, could you please post how one could find motivation in times of lack?

Many thanks and may God bless you always

Alan

Hi Alan!

I've only just started the Access Course, but when I've been studying for other courses and I've hit brick wall, I find it helps to focus on just one or two aspects at a time and make deadlines for myself. Just sitting down for half an hour before having to go out, or start another activity and being determined to read a chapter of a book, or write notes or an essay plan, seems to help me get started.

In my creative writing course, we were advised to just sit down and write the first thing that comes into our heads, before settling down to the real work.

I think the problem with studying alone, is that there are fewer targets and competition from being with other people, so it might be necessary to invent timescales to work on.

I also think it would be useful if more people used this forum to explore issues raised by their course work, as it would be a substitute for face to face contact with other students.

I hope you are able to overcome your difficulties and become more motivated.

Hi both

I started the Access Course about a year ago, and made brilliant progress over last Easter while on vacation from my full time studies. Since then I have had one essay to do to finish the course and I've managed to procrastinate for about 9 months, so I know what its like!

I'm now in the final term of the final year of a law degree and suddenly been motivated to get on with it. They say if you want something done give it to a busy person, and I've no idea how I will integrate this into the 4 law essays I have to do in the next month!

My advice to anyone else struggling to overcome procrastination is the same advice I will be giving myself - break it down into bite-sized chunks on a to-do list, and tick each item off when it is done. It's very helpful if you keep a diary or journal of what you've read, with progress notes or a summary, so that you can pick it up again fairly seamlessly from where you left off after a break. Otherwise you can end up reading the same thing again and again because you forgot what it said!

That's the theory anyway. I want this essay done and to be able to get on with a substantive course after my degree is finished.

Best wishes

Chris
